ETHIOPIA
The structure of Ethiopian names is: Given Name, Father’s name, Grandfather’s name.
Assume that for the purpose of the CQ database this becomes: FATHER’S name, Given name, Grandfather’s name (if known).
There are several ways to transcribe the Amharic characters of Ethiopian names into the Latin alphabet.
This gives for instance for the prefix Gebre also the spelling Gebr or Geber and for Aberha also Abrha, Abraha and Abarha.
As the entries in the CQ database have been made at different moments from different sources there are several spelling inconsistencies and two double entries in the list of Ethiopian riders.

FATHERSNAME GRANDFATHERSNAME Givenname

It's about the same as Spanish names, if you replace the grandmather's name by the mother's name.
Unlike Portuguese names, where the mother's name is put in front of the father's name.

I'll check all Ethiopian names now, hopefully with double names it's not too difficult to find out which of the 2 is the father's name

And a follow up question: does your source also metions if this is the same with Eritrean names?

I think these 1 January birthdates have a simple reason: all these riders don't have an official birth certificate or an unknown birthdate (maybe because of the war?). Therefore their official birthdate might have been put at 01-01.
In that case I would prefer to keep the full UCI code.
